Grades 10 – 12 is a challenging period for teens to manage all their activities and think about the future. Classmart is beginning an eight (8) week teen life-coaching course starting in term 2. Encourage your child to join a group of five learners for the eight weeks (one and a half hour sessions per week) and spend time learning the lessons they need before they face the world of study, adulthood and work. As a teacher, I am aware of budget constraints on parents and hence the small group coaching.

8 WEEK COURSE – R1 400.00 (BOOKING FEE R200.00 and balance on commencement of course or payable in two instalments) OR R150.00 X 8 (R200.00 BOOKING FEE and R150.00 payable before each session) Contact Karin to get the schedules for the grades and to book your place.

Multiplication Tables

If you can add, you can multiply!

Multiplication is just a quicker way to add a series of numbers.

For example, if you want to add the number 2 to itself, it is written as 2 + 2, which equals 4.

Adding another 2 is written as 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.

Adding more 2s becomes a cumbersome exercise. It is done much faster by using multiplication - that is, instead of writing 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, use the expression 3 x 2 = 6.

By simply memorising the complete set of multiplication tables you will be able to perform any mathematical calculation – simple or complex. But, not knowing your multiplication tables well may cost you dearly later in life. It has been said by more than one professor that, often the basic problem with science and maths students at university or college is that they do not know their basic multiplication tables.

Children respond very well to exciting and interesting worksheets. Take a little time and look at all the free resources on the web. Here is a website that offers free clipart. Enjoy using the free images to brighten up dull worksheets.

Remember that you copy and paste the images onto the worksheet and then use your "text wrapping" function, choose in front of text and you can move the image and manipulate it!

As a parent, I am aware of the frustration parents experience when projects are sent home and the learner cannot cope with what is expected. As a teacher I am often in the same position wondering what the purpose of certain projects are. But every project should be made into a learning experience and every parent should guard against DOING THE PROJECT FOR THE CHILD. Not only are you wasting your time but your child learns absolutely nothing!

DO YOU HATE HOMEWORK?

I am sure most parents hate homework, but ask yourself the question, why would the school punish you the parents with what seems to be this daily torture? Not long ago our parents went through the same thing, and so did our grandparents. Homework is part of life.
