OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING

The objectives of the programme are:

  • To equip teachers with the necessary knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to present Social Sciences as a learning area in the schools.
  • To enable teachers to understand the basic interpretation of the assessment standards and to give them ideas to implement in their classrooms.
  • To involve them in communication activities to demonstrate their research and presentation abilities.
  • To encourage them to solve problems through critical thinking skills.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

The content of the workshops will adhere to the National Curriculum Statement for Social Sciences of the National Education Department. The workshops should be simple yet comprehensive and should assist teachers in planning their classroom activities to lead to improved learner performance. Teachers should be confident in the core learning areas and should recognise many ideas and examples to use in their preparation.

Specific topics will be covered in the sessions and a workshop manual with additional ideas will be handed out. Teachers will be able to go back to their classes and continually revise on concepts covered.

History and Geography are presented in Social Sciences as separate but linked disciplines.

The skills focused on during the workshop will be:

  • Assessment skills

WORKSHOPS WILL BE CUSTOMISED TO SUIT THE NEEDS OF THE CLIENT.
