Salvokop Shelter Workshop

Young Sessa vanOn the morning of Saturday, 13th November 2010, the Young Sessa team arrived at the Salvokop Shelter to spend some time showing the boys at the shelter how solar energy can make a positive difference in their lives. Theuns van Aardt from CSI generously sponsored the morning and donated a solar water heating system to the shelter where the boys only have cold water for their daily cleaning needs.

Salvokop Shelter learnersThe presentation by YOUNG SESSA gives learners the opportunity to learn more about how to create a balance between the use of renewable energy and non-renewable energy. The learners learn about using solar cookers, how to make home-made cars move using a small solar panel and they build little fans using the same little solar panels. By becoming involved in the three hands-on activities, they become aware of the necessity and importance of using energy efficient products in our communities.

Karin demonstrated the solar cooker and heated some delicious spaghetti. Then she demonstrated how the Chighubu works. It is a thermosiphon system.Karin demonstrates solar cookers

Learners need to be aware that any product and the production of the product have an impact on the environment. When we develop and produce gadgets, etc. the product or the process can have either good or bad effects on the environment.

Chighubu - thermosiphon systemKarin encouraged learners to use their creativity to build their own solar cookers. Many recyclable materials can be used to make the cookers. However, learners should consistently asked questions about the impact their designs will have on the environment and the world.

Laura assisted the boys to assemble the toy cars and then the fun began. Whose car was going to go the fastest? Did the angle of the panel make a difference in the effective running of the vehicle?

Solar ComponentsRegardt challenged the boys to use the components available to put together a fan. The boys were very excited when they saw how effectively the gadget worked and all because the solar panel harvested the energy from the sun.

Theuns van Aardt - CSI certificateThe morning ended with donuts and juice and Regardt then presented the certificate to Elna on behalf of Theuns van Aardt from CSI. This generous gift will make a huge difference in the lives of these children. They understand now how powerful the energy of the sun is and how important it is to make the most of what nature has to offer us.

What a lovely day. Laura did a lucky draw and three boys won some solar energy kits. They were thrilled. Laura made it very clear though that sharing is caring!Laura gave solar energy kit to boy

The Young Sessa team left feeling really privileged to spend time with these boys and making a difference in their lives.
